Shuttle & Transportation Info
FREE Provided Shuttle Transportation:
Opulent Temple has contracted to provide free shuttle buses from San Francisco to Treasure Island between the hours of 9:00 pm and 4:30 am. These buses will run in 40 minute intervals, and are each capable of carrying up to ~40 people.
Pickup points have been designated :: 200 Larkin Street, @ Fulton right in front of the Asian Art Museum. Before even arriving the party you'll get laid, as the shuttles are the yellow school buses from Laidlaw. ; ) The closest BART and and underground Muni is Civic Center plaza stop. If you're waiting with enough friendly party people you can always split a cab from there as well.
Shuttles will be running throughout the night until 4:30 AM to take you back into the city.
Public transit (MUNI Bus 108) and Car pooling are other great ways to get the the party.
Public Transit/Taxi Services:
The location is conveniently located adjacent to the 108 MUNI bus line, which runs every 45 minutes, 24 hours per day, and goes directly to the Transbay Terminal in San Francisco. In addition to this, we are designating the shuttle service pickup locations as taxi cab pickup stops, and have alerted local taxi cab companies of this plan.
Available Event Parking:
The Treasure Island event facility has ample parking capacity for over 600 vehicles. This area will be supervised by an organized team of event volunteers and security staff throughout the evening. As well, we are actively encouraging our event attendants to carpool to the event. Spots are first come first parked, early arrival recommended if you need to drive. Please don't drive alone! Sorry - no tail gating. Cops orders.
DIRECTIONS: Drive careful please. Both exits onto TI are a little perilous and should be taken slow. Either direction from the bridge onto Treasure Island - head to the north side of the Island (the "Treasure" not "Yerba Buena" Island) - There's one road of entry that winds around and lands down at a previously manned security gate with stop sign. Head through the gate and take the first right hand turn onto California Ave. Follow it down and you'll see our parking attendants there to help you get set. Don't forget your ID.
On the Age question
Speaking of, here's some inside skinny on how this party has illustrated what's wrong with the current system of permitting events by SFPD.
We explored making this 100% benefit an 18+ event. We did this for many reasons which include : popular demand, because we've come to realize plenty of 18-20 year olds go to BM and should be included in the culture when it's feasible, because if you can fight and die for your country, or vote, or be tried as an adult - you should have the right to attend a party where there also happens to be a bar. And, we knew we'd have a better chance of actually raising funds at our fundraiser. (Last year's OT massive on TI was 21+ and it essentially just broke even, which given the time and work involved, not to mention huge financial risk, was heart breaking.)
We have a spotless event record with the city and have never had any issues or concerns that would warrant restrictions on who comes to our party. There are frequent and ample 18+ events on Treasure Island and all over the city already. We expected a relatively small turn out of this demographic because we've never thrown an 18+ event, and never posted it on line that it was 18+. (Only targeted flyers and posters). Though we felt they were totally unnecessary and we don't like it, we even agreed to beer gardens with a stringent system to guarantee those under 21 would have zero access to alcohol at the event.
Given all this info, the answer was - if we wanted a bar that served more than beer and wine, we had to be 21+. This was made by one police officer at one station with no recourse for appeal or review. Plenty of helpful and great people lobbied on our behalf, including the Entertainment Commission, to no avail. The Chief deferred to the Captain (ie, he won't over rule his personally biased and baseless decision), and so we have to restrict the event to 21+. Now we know plenty of you out there will say 'good', because you have a stigma in your mind about what an 18+ party looks like. But we know this would never be that. We hope we've earned your trust enough over the years for you to know that too. We also have to hire 5 (!) off duty SFPD to be there and pay their over time rate. The last 2 events on TI we had 2 each time, and they had (of course) nothing to do. I'm told the number of cops we have to hire at a serious expense to us is non-negotiable. It's a shake down friends, and this directly effects the pricing of the party as well (see below).
If you're under 21 and bought a ticket when we believed we'd be an 18+ event, we're sorry, and we'll process a refund for you. (Contact info@opulenttemple.org) If you wanted to go and now can't, we hope you're as annoyed as we are. There will be a time to let your voice be heard on this issue, and we need you to. We think it's ridiculous. And - we know we're just one in a string of events that variations of this are happening to. A small number of SFPD are imposing a moralistic and neo-prohibitionist vision on the city and it's hurting our night life, our culture, and our city's economy. This is San Francisco ? Stay connected to OT via our e mail list or Facebook stuff to hear about action when the time comes. For now, we want to get through our event....
On Party Pricing
We realize this is an expensive show compared to most theme camp fundraisers, but please consider all the ways this is NOT a normal camp fundraiser ! Every element we're putting together to make this a legendary event costs money, and every affiliated art car, art project, BM camp, etc that we're working with are getting money to be there. So your ticket supports not just OT, but a number of crews, collectives and projects as well.
You may also have noticed that rather than OT doing half a dozen club nights and smaller parties to meet our fundraising goals this summer, we are only doing this. A lot of eggs are in this collective basket for our presence at BM this year, and we really need the support of the community on this one. Trust us that it will be awesome and memorable and well worth it.
We are also required to have a higher number of cops, fire marshalls and EMT there than has ever been indicated by what actually happens at our events. This alone takes $10k + out of our pocket for essentially nothing. It's an especially unnecessary and painful budget line item.
Nevertheless, with your help we'll over come all the BS, and go legendary, at a party that will be both Opulent and Massive, thanks in advance for your support. Please tell a friend.
